6 Things to Know Before Buying a Copper Bath

30 Oct 2020, 1:12 PM

Copper freestanding baths are becoming increasingly popular in bathroom design and renovations. Homeowners looking to renovate their homes are looking more and more at removing standard built-in baths and upgrading their space with an elegant freestanding bath or walk-in shower.

With a copper bath, theirs more than what meets the eye and not all are created equal. So having a good amount of knowledge at hand before purchasing your beautiful new copper bath will help you avoid disappointment and choose a bath that lasts.

Copper baths are easy to care for

Theirs a very prevalent myth about copper, and it usually stems from old shiny copper-bottomed pans and the not-so-fond memories of having to scrub and polish them to keep them looking their best. This has led to a lot of people believing that a copper bath would be high maintenance and generally a hassle to keep them looking good.

You'll be pleased to know that this is not the case with copper baths. Pure copper is a very low maintenance material, all you need to do is rinse and dry the inside after use to prevent spotting. For cleaning the outside and inside we recommend a very mild soap and a non-abrasive cloth to give it a wipe down.

Copper Baths are Antibacterial

Recent studies have highlighted that copper surfaces remove more than 99% of bacteria that is harmful to humans within 2 hours. This means that your bath is antibacterial without the use of any disinfectants or antibacterial products you may have under your kitchen sink. Other materials can harbour the same bacteria for up to a month if not properly cleaned and cared for.

Copper Baths are Self-Healing

Compared to other materials, copper baths won't scratch any more or less but if you do scratch the surface of your copper bath, don't panic. Copper has what is known as a "living finish" and you will find if you go about your daily routine the scratch will soon begin to take on the same colouring as the rest of the bath, effectively hiding it.

Copper Baths Get Better With Age

High-Quality copper, like that used in the production of baths, has what's known as a living finish that sets it apart from other materials and metals. When left untreated, the oxygen in the air reacts with the metal over time, deepening and enriching it's finish. When new, the metal with have a slightly pink colour that will gradually darken into tan and coffee-like tones until reaching a rich and deep finish.

Important Elements for the Best Copper Bath

Not all copper baths on the market today are created equal as there are different components and processes involved with any copper product. Each component will affect the quality, performance and appearance of the bath. Some basic things to look out for are whether it's made from pure or recycled copper and the gauge of the metal used.

  • Recycled Copper
Recycled copper comes from melting down discarded copper items and alloys. The majority of copper available is not pure copper. BC Designs uses only high-quality copper for the manufacture of all their copper baths. This helps to minimise any rusting or compromising of the natural look of the product. If you prefer to keep the shiny appeal of fresh copper though, BC Designs recommends you use Renaissance Wax to protect the finish.

  • Weight/Guage
Even though copper is a durable material, it is still soft and malleable. A good quality copper bath such as a BC Designs bath uses high gauge copper to ensure that their products will stand the test of time and meet the demands of everyday use.
